Snow vs. Squish
We are faced with the choice of moving to one of two places so Bad Cohen can continue his grad school career:
- Santa Barbara: 3 of us crammed into 650 sq. ft. student housing with no yard, nice weather but everything is crazy expensive
- Cleveland: we could buy a farmhouse outright, but it snows 7 months of the year and I might not be able to find a job
Opinions?

Very, very tough choice. But it really depends on what's more important to you, as you know Penelope would say: quality of life or "interest" or "happiness". Do you want to be near more culture or be able to have a bigger house? Is either location closer to family? I would go for Cali, just because you can find a job there.
I would go for Santa Barbara because 7 months of snow is depressing and nice weather is spiritually uplifting. You can have lots of fun for free in a park but being stuck inside on a cold day is not enjoyable at all!
Or how about this? Live in Cleveland but instead of buying a farmhouse, move to a neighborhood where you can walk and use public transit to stuff. It doesn't have to be in the inner city either- the light rail goes to Shaker Heights (an affluent inner suburb) and there are some other nice suburbs with OK bus service.
Santa Barbara. In warm weather it doesn't matter that the house is small. In freezing weather, even if warm, the house is too small.
I knew everyone would have opinions. :) We're leaning toward Cali, partly b/c Bad Cohen's health problems are exacerbated by cold and bad weather. But home and esp. yard/garden are very important to me, so I'll have to find a way to get my dirt on.
Santa Barbara! Once you move to California, you can always look for more space/square footage but there won't be a darn thing you'll be able to do about the weather in Cleveland.
Of course, once we move to SB we won't be able to AFFORD more space. They sell double-wides for over $200k there.
I keep meeting really cool people (ok, jews) from cleveland and they all love it. and they *do* have pj library. so i'll be the lone voice for cleveland, but remember that i moved from paradise (ashland) to new england. by choice.
a friend just posted this on facebook, so i thought i'd pass it along-
